How I Think About Food Planning

Mix Up Your Menu

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give about meal planning for backpacking trips is to add at least some variety to your menu. Its easy to plan one days worth of food and then just say thats what you are going to eat for the next 3-5 days.

I promise you, after day two of eating the same thing you’ll wish you brought that field guide book for identifying edible plants.

Im not saying that every meal, every day, has to be different. A little variety will go a long way. If you notice in my email plan below, I vary things like different types of jerky, trail mixes, and drink flavors. Just these few variants from day to day help me feel like Im not eating the same things over and over even though my menu is 90% the same everyday.

How to Scale

The menu below is laid out for a 3 day, 2 night, backpacking trip. That said, you can easily scale this menu for longer trips.

All you need to do to scale this menu is repeat the day 2 menu items for however many additional days you need. Just be sure to add in some variety as mentioned above.

Packing Your Food

Everyone does this a little differently. Some people like to just dump all their food into the bear canister and call it a day. I am a bit more OCD and like to have everything organized into ziplock bags. I produce a little more trash this way, but it keeps my brain from going haywire.

I like to breakfast and my snakes into individual bags for each day and label them. I label them so that I make sure to keep my variety of food mixed up and not accidentally eat the same snacks two days in a row.

Because the dehydrated dinners come in their own bag and the rest of the meal is the same every night, I put all the tea bags and brownies into a single bag labeled dinner. The dehydrated dinners just sit loose in the bear bag.

I also like to organize the bear bag by putting day 1 meals at the top of the bear bag and the following days under it. This way I don’t have to tear open the entire bag every time Im looking for a meal. Each meal will always be ready in the top of the bear bag when I need it.
